Dorothy and Jennie in Sri Lanka
August 3-19, 2019
10 - The Esala Perahera

On Monday, August 12, Ken took Dorothy and Jennie into Kandy for a special day. Shortly after noon, we had tea at a restaurant on the hill, providing a spectacular view of the lake. After the rain stopped, we descended to have lunch at the food court of the City Center. About four o'clock, we walked to Paperline, where we had arranged seats for the Perahera, Sri Lanka's spectacular festival procession. We had had to get into town so early, because downtown traffic is stopped at about two o'clock. When we arrived at Paperline, the store had already closed, and the seats were taken, but there were empty spaces on the curb, and a cloth had been spread, so we sat down. The biggest problem was that there was a wailing child right behind us, but everyone was very courteous as the street became crowded. The procession began at about eight o'clock, and it was awesome. Our seats were perfect for a close-up view of the dances and the elephants. Jennie viewed most of the three hours of pageantry through the lens of her video camera, but she enjoyed it immensely.
