| The original stupa was enlarged several times. Excavations inside the earliest stupa, which was perfectly preserved, revealed pieces of charcoal and blackened earth, no doubt from the funeral pyre of Buddha's cremation. Inscriptions prove that the stupa was enlarged in the fifth century C.E. by a monk named Haribala, who also donated the image in the Nibbana Temple. | |||
