At the time of Buddha, Vesali was the chief city of the Liccavis. On his last visit to the city, Buddha accepted an invitation from Ambapali a renowned courtesan. The Liccavi princes offered Ambapali a great sum to allow them to serve Buddha and the Sangha instead, but she refused. After the meal, Ambapali donated her beautiful mango grove to the Sangha. Later she became a bhikkhuni and attained arahatship.
