Made from polished sandstone, the Vajrasana was probably made by King Ashoka. The top of the throne is decorated with unusual designs, including a goose frieze around the edge. Because of its migratory habits, the wild goose (hamsa) was used in ancient Buddhism as a symbol of detachment. King Ashoka also used the same goose design on his pillar capital at Sanchi.
