For six years the Bodhisatta had studied under other teachers and subjected himself to harsh austerities. His body was cruelly wasted by self-mortification.
Then . . . searching for the incomparable, matchless path of peace, while walking ... through Magadha I arrived at Uruvela . . . . There I saw a beautiful stretch of ground, a lovely woodland grove, a clear flowing river . . . with a village nearby for support . . . . So I sat down there, thinking: "Indeed, this is a good place for striving.
