This year, the course, sponsored by Buddhist Relief Mission and Young Buddhist Monks' Literacy Mission, will be held in BuddhaGaya (BodhGaya) from July 24 to August 23.
We expect about 60 students. We have three full-time teachers and several coming for part of the course. Given the large number of students and the extensive contact hours, we need more teachers. As we never tire of saying, teaching in these intensive courses is a splendid experience. The students, almost all monastics, primarily Burmese monks and nuns, are eager and diligent. They are well-versed in Pali and Dhamma studies, but have had limited exposure to English, and need practice in all areas of English to succeed in their university studies. They will also benefit from discussions of current happenings, social issues, and how the Dhamma can be applied to contemporary events. We invite experienced ESL teachers to contact us so that we can discuss how you might fit into the program and share your classroom skills, focusing on the aspects of English you prefer to teach. For more information about past courses, please click the links below. Of course, teaching in the Indian Intensive Course is entirely voluntary. Though we cannot offer any monetary compensation, accommodation and food will be provided. Please send us a resume for consideration. In that Buddhist Relief Mission is a 501 (c)3 organization, all expenses, including travel to and from India, can be deducted on the volunteer’s IRS tax return. We also invite generous donors to contribute to the cost of the month-long course. Donations may be made either toward meals for the students or "general," in which case the funds will be used for printing and essential teaching materials.
