Dorothy and Jennie in Sri Lanka
August 3-19, 2019
13 - Dambulla

On August 15, after breakfast at the guest house in Habarana, we headed south to Dambulla to visit the magnificent caves. Jagath drove Dorothy, Jennie, and Ken halfway up, so it was an easy climb. There are five caves, and every surface, except the floor, of every cave is covered with murals. The walls are lined with hundreds of serene images representing all mudras. The effect is overwhelming, but on close examination, you can identify many stories from the life of the Buddha and many Jatakas. From the top of the rock, the panoramic view of the surrounding area is also stunning.

Visakha and Lily waited for the others at the Dambulla Rest House and ordered a nutritious lunch of vegetable curry and rice, with ice cream for dessert. The same as Habarana, Dambulla had been suffering from drought, so it was important not to waste water.
