Alex Burdett officiated the ceremony at our house in Sojiji, a town in Ibaraki City, Osaka. Only a few friends attended. The only family member was Hiroshi, Ken's cousin from Kofu. Visakha is wearing a silk Maranao malong from the Philippines. Ken is wearing a kimono. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
The reception was held the next day in the Kobe Steel Gymnasium. More than one hundred friends attended. The oldest guest was our landlady, Mrs. Yoshikawa. As she was leaving, she asked whether she could take some of the natural cheese from the buffet home for her husband. She said that he had never tasted anything like that. He had died during World War Two. She wanted to place the cheese on the altar for him.
Instead of cutting a wedding cake, we broke a taru {barrel) of sake. Then we offered each guest some of the rice wine in one of the small wooden boxes on the table. Our names had been burned into each box, and that masu was our gift. Asahi Shinbun, one of the big three dailies in Japan featured our reception in photo essay on unusual weddings. The three large photos were taken by the newspaper photographer. |
