| Isipatana is the modern Sarnath. The Dhammarajka stupa marks the place where Buddha first proclaimed the Dhamma in the world. At the end of the eighteenth century, the local maharaja carted off much of the stupa and used its bricks to build a market. In the process he exposed a stone box and casket containing relics which he threw into the Ganges. | |||
