| Excavations in 1971 revealed that this stupa was first built in the fifth century BC and twice enlarged afterwards. In the central chambers caskets were found which held reliquaries containing fragments of charred bone. The date, location, and contents of the caskets make it quite certain that these are the cremated relics of Buddha which had been given to the Sakyans. | |||
